The social surplus of Mani has always been limited. The struggles for survival of numerous people in the rugged and barren land of Mani (mainly in the areas of Mesa and Kato Prosiliaki Mani) succeeded in bearing fruit, but without guaranteeing opportunities for trading activities. Nevertheless, the region of South Laconian Mani has a huge natural advantage: it is a station in the migratory journey of flocks of quail to the hot African countries. Hunting quail offered locals not only a source of nutritional wealth, but also a product strong for export to buyers in the domestic and international markets, already from the 16th century: in the archives of “Laconia” Newspaper articles can be found that document the export of quail. Locals used to hunt quail either individually (with a net or a rifle) or in groups (trapela).

Cape Tenaron is a resting spot for quails during autumn, as they migrate to the warm countries of Africa. For the locals this occurrence was somewhat like “a gift from the heavens”. Quails became an important exporting product. They were sold to various areas of Greece and were also exported to foreign markets. Quail hunting was done either individually or collectively. Women and children would also partake. Group hunting was called trapela: the locals would split into groups and go hunting on the hillside. They would arouse the birds by making loud noises and then they would catch them with nets.

MAKESHIFT TOOL used for hunting quail, one of the most cherished hobbies of the local residents. The net took its name from the respective similar tool of fishermen. It consisted of a long wood that ended on the one side in two thinner twigs, which bent and formed a hoop. A kind of net bag was mounted around the hoop, in order to cage the quail. The net was quite heavy; that is why the person holding it had to be strong and skillful. Hunters followed a method called “trapela”: they formed a rectangle, in order to trap as many quail as possible by moving quickly. Women were equally skilled in handling the net, the well-known “ardikoloisses” of Porto Kagio and Tenaro ports, which were stations for quail on their way to Africa.

MAKESHIFT TRAP used for hunting birds. Its construction is very simple: it consists of an elongated wood, one side of which is fixed on the ground. A small rope was tied at its other end, at the edge of which a hook was fixed. Small worms were placed at the hook as bait.

PEOPLE OF MANI used to hunt quail that over Tenaro during their seasonal migration an countries. Discarded meat, like pork, was preserved in salt in oil pitchers, as stock for ter. In order to roast quail, locals used make- ay bases with partitions on the upper part, were suitable for placing the meat.

SINGLE-BARREL muzzle-loading rifle that be- longed to the Grafakos family. It was made of metal, with a wooden butt and a leather strap for transport. It was made in 1900 and was in use until the late 1940s.
