136 - Bee smoker

THE BEE SMOKER was a tool used in beekeeping, an activity very widespread in the northwestern part of Mani, with its favorable environment and rich flowering in native plants and herbs, such as thyme, sage, tea and oregano. Locals used square boxes made of clay pr stone plates, called “therides”, for beekeeping. The bee smoker was used for stunning bees twice a year, during the harvest of honey in the winter and in the summer. It basically consists of two metal structures, which are joined by a leather piece. A metallic funnel is fixed at the tip, through which smoke passed.
