Β74 - Locals carving oars at Paliros, a village near Cape Tenaron

The land of Mani is dry, rocky and rugged. With the help of the appropriate tools, the people of Mani learned to adapt to this harsh environment. They used stones to build their family towers as well as the terrace fields where they cultivated their crops. They carved limestone to create decorations for their houses and churches. They collected sea salt from the coastal rocks. They created stone beehives from which they harvested their well-known honey. They used the stone to grind their wheat and lupins, as well as to produce olive oil. They appreciated the aroma and healing properties of their land’s plants and herbs.
