A18 - Stone Beehive
BUILT STONE BEEHIVE.
of Mani organized beekeeping in artificial stone houses. The built stone beehives of Mani are called “therides”, “melissotherides” or “trypes” and there are two construction types: the built (square) stone beehives and the primitive beehives, which are literally described as: “(beehives) constructed with four wide stones, in order to look like a box in the front.” The therides of Mani looked like square boxes placed one next to another.
Sometimes, their vertical development reached two or three floors, which were covered by roof tiles or “tikles” from Mani. Therides were made of either stone or clay and their front was closed, with only a small open hole at the bottom, from where bees could pass through. The construction had a little wooden door at its back, through which the beekeeper collected the honey.
