025 - Ceramic laina

CERAMIC UTENSIL for the transportation and storage of water in the house. It had two handles on the side for easier transportation and its orifice at the top was sealed either with a wooden stopper or a cloth. It is decorated with strips all around. Such vessels were manufactured at local workshops and their names vary depending on the area at which they are located, as well as on their size and shape: stamna, siklos, kapassa, kouroupi, tzara. Apart from water carried from nearby sources, these ceramic jars were frequently used for storing oil or wine as well. In order to keep their content at a natural temperature, locals placed them into properly shaped recesses in the walls, in the basement or any other underground area of the residence.
