050 - Part of pickaxe

PICKAXES were farming tools made of iron and used for digging fields and cutting bushes. It con- sists of a long wood that served as a handle, on top of which a metal part was mounted that end- ed in a sharp blade. Variations of this tool can be found in various regions of Greece and the shape of their blade varies, depending on their intended use (mattock, hand hoe, backhoe). It belonged to the grandfather of the family and was in use until the beginning of the 20th century.
