086 - Mortar

MARBLE UTENSIL used for crushing granules of salt, coffee and spices. It bears semicircular protrusions at its four ends, functioning as handles. In the past, salt, coffee and spices were sold in crude form and were processed at home. Coffee and salt were crushed with the help of a pestle. The pestle belonged to the grandmother of the Poulikakos family and was part of her dowry.

Donor: Panagiota Poulikakou
