European E4 path is an international, long-distance trail supervised by the European Ramblers Association (E.R.A./ E.W.V.), connecting Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus. The Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering & Climbing undertook planning and signposting the Greek segment of the trail. The Greek route stretches over about 1800 km, starting in Florina and ending in southern Crete.
Path E4 enters Laconia from Arcadia, at the village of Karyes on the slopes of Mt. Parnon, it crosses the forest, and ends at Vresthena. The route through Sparta leads to the fortress of Mystras with its Byzantine churches and stone-paved lanes. The path affords a view of Mt. Taygetus and, after a 7-hour trek, leads to Anavryti and the shelter of Mt. Taygetus, where visitors can spend the night. The forest paths pass by numerous springs and end at Pentavli, a location of exceptional natural beauty, which is an extension of Anakolo Gorge. Near the river, the route continues through the ravine, past old bridges and traditional water mills, to reach Arna and the famous Monastery of Panagia Giatrissa, before ending at Kastania. From there on, the path goes through traditional hamlets, caves, forests, hills, springs, and waterbeds and reaches Gytheio.
The E4 segment in the Prefecture of Laconia crosses traditional hamlets, unique landscapes and important habitats, and offers a wonderful experience to nature lovers.
