154 Α - Olive marking tool

OLIVES were an integral part of the simple diet of the people of Mani. Harvest began in October and lasted until mid December, depending on the production. Olives were initially gathered “chamoloi”, meaning directly from the ground, and later with olive cloths. A portion of the crop intended for oil production was then transported to the oil mill, while another portion was kept for consumption. After the olives were separated from leaves and small twigs, a work done at the “plastiri” or “sofras”, they were marked and placed in brine to take the bitterness out. Marking was done on a rectangular piece of wood like this, with three slots lined with metal in the middle.
